Since I can remember I've loved dance. And before I went off to study ballet at respected programs such as Nutmeg Ballet Conservatory and Colorado Ballet, Maryland's ballet community trained me.
It's wonderful to be back home.
I'm excited to share my journey with others who think Ballet may be their professional destiny.
I'm Alyssa Hyman, ballet dancer and Maryland native. I started dancing at age 8 at Expressions Dance Company, a Black-owned studio in Annapolis, MD.
I've always loved Classical ballet, a tough passion for dancers of color.
I grew up dancing when Misty Copeland gained popularity. She helped people realize that there is a path for Black dancers interested in Classical. But, the road is not easy.

In other words, I've been studying to be a professional ballerina most of my life.
Returning to Ballet Theatre of Maryland for my first professional experience has been surreal. BTM's summer intensive was my first and now I'm a member of the company. I want young dancers to know that if you want to dance professionally, you can. It's hard. But it's possible.
